COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A U.S. military operation linked to the capture of Maduro led to flight cancellations that stranded CT travelers in Caribbean hubs like San Juan and Aruba last Saturday. Some passengers have been rebooked while others wait for new departures later this week.  The Hour

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Norwalk firefighters rescued a cat from a Woodward Avenue home fire early Monday at around 3:40 a.m. The blaze was contained in 25 minutes + no one was injured.  The Hour

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wegmans' sole Norwalk location, open since July 2025, does not show visible signs of biometric monitoring, unlike its NYC stores that display notices about using facial recognition data to identify flagged individuals. Company officials say the system is reserved for elevated risks + Connecticut law does not require similar disclosures.  The Hour
  • CT-based companies Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky supplied engines and airframes for fighter jets and helicopters used in the Jan. 3 U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife; recent defense contracts are bolstering local aerospace employment.  The Hour
  • Texas-based GameStop closed four Connecticut stores at Enfield Mall, Waterbury Brass Mill Center, Newington and Stratford this week. The retailer, which closed six locations in 2025, expects to shut more stores before the end of its fiscal year.  The Hour

CULTURE NEWS

  • A statewide series of MLK Day events, from parades to screenings and art workshops, will occur across Connecticut from Jan. 15 to Feb. 3. Organizers in New Haven, Stamford, Branford, Hartford, New Canaan, New Britain and West Hartford invite public participation.  Connecticut Public
  • Broadway actor Bret Hanna-Shuford, known for his roles in major shows and his work at Westport Country Playhouse, died Saturday at 46 after battling T-cell lymphoma and HLH — his husband confirmed he passed away peacefully with his family by his side.  The Hour

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new website maps Connecticut's birds using four years of volunteer data, showing that 64% of local breeding species are declining while some raptors have increased after pesticide bans + climate shifts. The atlas helps conservationists determine which lands to protect for continued breeding.  Connecticut Public
  • Connecticut lawmakers created a 25-member working group in June to study changes to riparian buffer protections along local waterways to address flood risks and pollution. The group will meet on Jan. 7 and report its recommendations to the Environment Committee by Jan. 15.  The Hour

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Metro-North did not raise fares for Connecticut riders in Norwalk even though changes effective Sunday replaced round-trip tickets with day passes valid until 4 a.m. and increased other fare types, according to MTA.  The Hour

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn coach Geno Auriemma criticized risky passes after the team recorded 17 turnovers in two games, including a 84-48 win over Seton Hall in Hartford on Saturday (despite leading the nation in assists). The Huskies are now pushing key player Sarah Strong to take smarter shots.  The Hour
  • Northwest Catholic, Sacred Heart Academy, Sheehan, and Greenwich remain top-ranked per the Jan. 5 poll, and Bristol Central hosts New Britain Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. as SHA meets Sheehan Friday at 7 p.m. — teams gear up for busy conference play.  The Hour
