CRIME NEWS

  • Two Norwalk dental providers settled False Claims Act allegations by reimbursing Medicaid a total of about $600K—federal officials stated neither admitted liability.  The Hour
  • A Winsted woman named Sarah Smolak turned herself in on May 9 on a new animal cruelty charge in Norwalk while previously pleading not guilty on 38 counts in Torrington—she now faces 40 counts, including neglect charges for a foster dog, and is set to appear in Stamford Superior Court on May 28.  News 12 Connecticut

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sacred Heart University Space Museum hosted Space Day on Friday afternoon for local students and community members interested in space exploration—featuring planetarium shows and interactive science experiments. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut lawmakers approved a bill on May 9th to lower e-book costs for libraries by relying on states totaling seven million people — the measure now heads to the House and will take effect if other states pass similar laws.  The Hour
  • Deidre Gifford, a top official in Gov. Ned Lamont’s administration, will retire by July after records show she approved canceling a 2020 Medicaid audit that would have exposed fraudulent billing by a Connecticut eye doctor — her involvement may make her a key witness in a pending federal trial.  Connecticut Public
  • On May 9th, the City of Norwalk announced that Business Development Manager Alex Cross was recognized as a 2025 Fairfield County 40 Under Forty award winner for his role in linking entrepreneurs with city economic support resources. The award ceremony will be held on June 12th at Serafresca in Stamford+ marking the event's 20th anniversary.  City of Norwalk

  • Connecticut’s top public health official, Dr. Manisha Juthani, said she is working each day to counter federal funding cuts and low trust in science messaging while keeping safe water, vaccinations, and other essential services available.
