COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 5, the Human Services Council held its annual Sunset Stroll Gala at The Point at Norwalk Cove to call for local support for programs that help unhoused individuals, low-income seniors, and students amid declining state, federal, and corporate funding. Community members, local officials and donors attended an event with live music, auctions and testimonials—while HSC outlined plans to expand supportive housing and workforce development programs.  Nancy On Norwalk

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Norwalk official Ellen Wink, accused of fatally shooting her tenant Kurt Lametta on Jan. 20 at her Nelson Avenue home, will resume her murder trial Monday—police will offer further testimony as the case moves toward jury selection next week.  The Hour

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frankie Vagnone became the new CEO of the Stepping Stones Museum for Children on June 2 as the museum marks 25 years of engaging children and caregivers in Norwalk. He said he plans to spend time with visitors to learn how the museum can better serve the community moving forward.  The Hour

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Norwalk parents emailed officials to delay the board's budget vote because more than 80 teachers may lose their jobs this fall due to a $13.2 million gap—70% of the affected teachers work at Norwalk elementary schools. The board will meet tomorrow at 7 p.m. at City Hall while Mayor Harry Rilling and state Sen. Bob Duff plan to discuss additional funding.  News 12 Connecticut

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Norwalk residents will have a chance to explore a new demonstration garden at Oak Hills Park on Thursday that shows a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant lawn planted with wildflowers—designed to reduce watering and mowing while helping pollinators. The project is led by the Norwalk Land Trust, Oak Hills Park Authority, and Norwalk Garden Club behind Oak Hills restaurant at 165 Fillow Street.  Nancy On Norwalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The General Assembly approved a $9.7B bond package to fund school construction, transportation upgrades, affordable housing, and municipal aid, with votes of 35-1 in the Senate and 144-4 in the House + Gov. Lamont is expected to sign the measure after the State Bond Commission approves it. The bond package also supports security upgrades and renovations for child care and higher education infrastructure.  Nancy On Norwalk

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Norwalk Health Department is offering free tick testing for residents while advising people to avoid wooded areas, use EPA-approved repellents, and check for ticks on themselves and pets—nonresidents pay $15 for testing and results will help detect Lyme disease and other tick illnesses. Residents are encouraged to seek medical help if symptoms such as fever or rash appear.  City of Norwalk
  • Church and Dwight Co. has recalled certain Zicam nasal and Orajel baby teething swabs sold in Connecticut due to potential fungal contamination that may lead to serious blood infections in children and people with weakened immunity. The FDA advises consumers to stop using the products immediately and call 800-981-4710 for a refund—no customers have reported severe effects as of June 6.  The Hour
