Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of July.
Good morning, Norwalk.
📰 Finance
A Norwalk resident claimed a $100K prize on Tuesday after winning the Cash 5 game at C&S Grocery.
Connecticut Lottery reported the odds were 1 in 324,632—this win is the largest lottery prize claimed in July so far.
🏛️ Government
Under a new law signed by Gov. Ned Lamont, the Connecticut Department of Correction must create a plan for body-worn cameras for corrections officers and present it to the General Assembly by February 1—state watchdogs say this will increase transparency for both staff and the incarcerated. The plan may begin with pilot programs in two facilities while union representatives argue that funds might be better used to address staffing shortages.
Gov. Ned Lamont said he will meet with state lawmakers to analyze a federal bill passed before the July 4 deadline that may force Connecticut to cover cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.
Officials are monitoring the changes closely—worrying the new tax provisions could lead to budget shortfalls for critical social programs.
