Gov. Ned Lamont signed a law on Thursday that bans step therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and mental health drugs—insurers can no longer force patients to try cheaper alternatives first.

The law takes effect in January and adds penalties for insurers who do not cover mental and physical treatments equally.
