COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norwalk Senior Center, a private nonprofit operating since 1971, will hold an open house on July 23 from 10 a.m.—noon and 4—6 p.m. to offer food, raffles, free manicures, and cookie baking with a chance to win a seven-day cruise while explaining its $40-per-year membership that provides indoor pickleball, classes, transportation, and other free services.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • ASML awarded a $1.5M grant to the Riverbrook Regional YMCA to boost its SWIM program—providing free swim lessons for Norwalk first graders, upgrading the damaged splash pad, and expanding special needs programming over the next three years. Officials say the funding will help prevent drowning incidents and support community events.  The Hour
  • Local, state, and federal officials joined community members on Friday to break ground on Meadow Gardens, a project that will replace 54 old housing units on Meadow Street with 59 energy-efficient homes for low-income families. The redevelopment, led by the Norwalk Housing Authority and nonprofit Sound Communities Inc., will include units ranging from one to four bedrooms with extra features — a gym, community center and a free Learning Center for 36 children — and construction will continue through early 2027.  Nancy On Norwalk

CRIME NEWS

  • Norwalk police officer Lillian Martinez, 29, was arraigned on Tuesday on two counts of breach of peace after Stamford police arrested her on domestic violence-related charges from July 4, and she has been placed on leave while an investigation begins—she already turned in her firearms as ordered by the court.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Robert Pekar, a 38-year-old Westport man, was charged with first-degree larceny in Norwalk for allegedly stealing nearly $86K in equipment from a Connecticut Avenue business – he is also under investigation in Wilton, Danbury and Monroe for similar commercial burglaries.  The Hour
  • Last Friday, police arrested 28-year-old Mohamed Lebrahim at R & R Smoke Shop on Main Street after a smoke investigation uncovered over one kilogram of marijuana products in a hidden trap compartment, and his bail was set at $500.  News 12 Connecticut

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Norwalk Common Council discussed proposed charter changes on Monday that would restructure the Board of Estimate and Taxation, add a council representative, and update member compensation while debating voting rights and minority representation—leaders will work with the Charter Revision Commission to finalize proposals for a citywide referendum in the fall.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • State Reps Tracy Marra and Tom O'Dea will host a public legislative forum on July 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Darien Town Hall Auditorium — an event open to residents in the 141st and 125th districts, including Norwalk — to review the 2025 legislative session and discuss future legislative priorities.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • Norwalk mayoral candidates shared what they value about the city and detailed personal stories that show their local ties—Barbara Smyth highlighted her background in education and communications, Darlene Young emphasized decades of community service, and Vinny Scicchitano pointed to his long-standing local business experience.
