Good morning, Norwalk. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, July 13, more than 1,000 people gathered at The Point at Norwalk Cove to end the first phase of community feedback for redesigning Manresa Island Park, which will be renamed Manresa Wilds. Officials said a traffic study and talks with transit partners will shape the park's future—helping plan for cleanup and next steps—after DEEP’s public hearing in October.  Nancy On Norwalk

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three local artists—Fivefingaz, Jahmane West, and Oksana Tanasiv—presented proposals for the Ely Avenue Fencing Project to the Arts and Culture Commission, detailing designs that involve community participation. The commission approved the proposals and will let the artists revise their drafts before a public survey in about one month.  Nancy On Norwalk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Tuesday board meeting, Norwalk Public Schools learned they may lose over $1 million in federal grants that help fund key programs if Congress does not release the funds by August 14. The district could cut up to 15 full-time positions + see reduced community resources if the funding delay continues ahead of the new school year.  Nancy On Norwalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Norwalk awarded $146,194.50 in mini-grants to 18 local nonprofits Wednesday outside City Hall as part of the 2025 Mini-Grant Program to support groups in Health, Education, and Safety Net services—award amounts were based on scores evaluating service, impact, and equity.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • Yesterday, Norwalk’s Rev. Dr. Lindsay Curtis of Grace Baptist Church delivered the opening prayer on the House floor at the invitation of Rep. Jim Himes — his 90-second prayer urged lawmakers to find unity through faith.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Governor Ned Lamont and State Rep. Kadeem Roberts held a ceremonial signing event on July 17 at The Carver in Norwalk to mark SB 1542, a law that bans handcuffing children under 14 except in limited cases and raises the arrest age.
