  • Tidepieces are mechanical clocks created by inventor Alan Winick that track the rise and fall of tides. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Connecticut's Sales Tax-Free Week will begin Sunday with most clothing and footwear under $100 exempt from sales tax until Aug. 23—Annette Norton of Saavy and Grace in Westport said her store will see a 20% increase in business this week.  News 12 Connecticut

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Connecticut Office of Higher Education announced that the Student Loan Reimbursement Program will reopen for applications on Aug. 15 to help borrowers get up to $5,000 per year for student loan relief. The program now includes expanded criteria—such as broader educational and volunteer experiences and special provisions for Stone Academy students—to reach more state residents.  The Hour

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norwalk is the first city in the state to use a new law to recover nearly $500,000 in unpaid zoning fines from 15 properties with violations dating back to 2020. The city scheduled a tax sale for Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. at City Hall—property owners can call the Tax Collector’s Office with questions.  Nancy On Norwalk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Ned Lamont activated the state's hot weather protocol and opened cooling centers to help residents avoid heat stroke as the hottest stretch of the season approaches. The protocol will remain in place through Thursday and CDC officials advise everyone to drink water, stay indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors—guidelines that aim to protect those most at risk.  News 12 Connecticut
