CRIME NEWS

  • Leonela Chavez said she was outraged when a viral video showed ICE agents tasering her father, Leonel Chavez—who had lived in Norwalk for decades—and arresting him and her uncle, Ricardo Chavez on Friday, with both now held at an ICE detention center in Massachusetts.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Connecticut Rep. Corey Paris faced a surge in online threats after a right-wing account and an ICE repost called for federal charges against him, triggering FBI, state and Capitol police to investigate the abuse—some of which has been racist and remains under review.  Connecticut Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut received a letter from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding a reply by Tuesday, Aug. 19, and alleging that state policies limit federal immigration enforcement.   • Connecticut’s congressional delegation is seeking tens of millions in federal funding for nearly 170 projects in affordable housing, infrastructure, and local museums as part of a request to secure at least $177 million, but uncertainty remains if Congress passes a short-term continuing resolution before Sept. 30 — leaving some projects at risk. Lawmakers continue to negotiate funding details even as debates over rescissions and budget cuts add to the challenges.  Connecticut Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 19th, CAES experts warned that travelers returning from overseas should check for nonnative ticks hitching rides from countries like Guatemala—ticks that could bring new illnesses and stress our local ecosystem as climate change helps them spread. They advised anyone who finds ticks to remove them safely and seek a doctor’s help for testing.  Connecticut Public
