The Norwalk Tree Alliance and Courville Nurseries are giving free shade trees during August through Labor Day to cool streets and sidewalks and help lower energy bills—residents can email to apply and join the Norwalk Treesure Hunt to win an X-Box or earn a tree planted in their honor. The program offers nine types of trees and a fun scavenger hunt with clues and puzzles about notable Norwalk trees.
A Norwalk woman turned herself in after leaving her 1-year-old son unattended in a kiddie pool on July 12—police said officer Vazquez used his training to revive the child, who is expected to fully recover, while she now faces two counts of risk of injury to a minor with a court appearance set for Sept. 9.
On Wednesday morning, Norwalk officials announced that $2.5M in state funds will upgrade the Mary Roman Track and Field at City Hall for multi-sport use — the project will replace the gravel track with a new rubberized surface, install LED field lighting for evening play, and support baseball, softball, soccer and more while honoring Mary Roman, a former city clerk and Senior Olympian who inspired many.
State officials said that mosquito samples from 34 towns in Connecticut have tested positive for West Nile virus, with the highest levels in Fairfield, Hartford and New Haven counties.
There have been no human cases so far but experts warn that the risk may increase until mosquito activity stops in October—residents are advised to cover skin and use insect repellent.
