ECONOMY NEWS

  • State data shows Connecticut home heating oil prices rose to $3.18 a gallon in mid-September, adding about $119 this season for a furnace that burns 700 gallons. The increase follows two years of decline and leaves prices uncertain as crude costs and supplies influence the market—households have until Oct. 31 to lock in fuel contracts.  The Hour

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mayor Rilling and Senator Duff announced Monday that West Rocks Middle School will receive a new state-of-the-art building as part of Norwalk's 25-year school upgrade plan — the project is set to serve about 720 students and take two years before opening in Fall while following recent facility improvements across the city. The plan builds on a statewide 60% reimbursement program that supports new construction projects for local schools.  City of Norwalk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fall colors across Connecticut are shifting earlier as summer-like temperatures and a developing drought cause trees to change sooner — cooler weather will return this weekend and peak colors are expected in central and southern areas by mid-October.  The Hour
  • Researchers at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk reported that horseshoe crab numbers in the Sound have dropped 2% to 9% each year since the 1980s—a decline that could hurt fish, turtles and shorebirds that depend on them. The aquarium has started a study to count eggs on local beaches and learn more about the threats these ancient creatures face.  Connecticut Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • This fall, CT birthing hospitals will give new mothers an orange bracelet with a handbook of warning signs to help reduce postpartum complications.
