CULTURE NEWS

  • Host Romney Donald spoke with Norwalk native artist Jahmane Artz in an episode of Community Ties—he explained how his work in painting, photography, fashion and large-scale murals reflects themes of spirituality, mythology and a call for a fairer public art process amid concerns over the Ely Avenue selection process.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra will open its 86th season on Saturday, Oct. 18th at 7:30 p.m. at Norwalk Concert Hall with Music of the Sea featuring film, pop, opera, jazz and classical works inspired by water. A pre-concert talk with Music Director Jonathan Yates and Maritime Aquarium Director of Education Thomas Naiman — along with live aquarium events in the lobby — will provide extra insight before the performance.  Nancy On Norwalk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Board of Education chair Diana Carpio said that the new South Norwalk School was named without the planned community meetings as a placeholder, and a sign was put up early—causing confusion among residents. The board will hold a meeting with committees to discuss the school name and address the issue.  The Hour

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norwalk residents attended a Sept. 24 public budget meeting held by the City and Norwalk Public Schools to share ideas and concerns about transparency and fiscal challenges. Mayor Harry Rilling and CFO Jared Schmitt addressed issues such as a $3.5 million deficit and proposed $13 million school budget cuts—community members also urged more sustainable practices and clearer communication from officials.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • The Norwalk Police Department and local clergy will host a Faith and Blue breakfast on Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Norwalk Inn and Conference Center to launch the National Faith and Blue Weekend—police Chief James Walsh and other officers will attend various services throughout the weekend.  Nancy On Norwalk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Connecticut has spent over $100 million on state-funded health care for undocumented children and mothers under the Husky program, which expanded coverage to children up to 15 as enrollment exceeded projections – adding pressure to the state Medicaid program. Lawmakers continue to debate further expansion amid the federal shutdown dispute.  The Hour
  • Connecticut health officials say that even though federal funding cuts have reduced staff and supplies, the state will work with regional partners to offer flu vaccines and COVID-19 boosters this fall—local health directors in New Haven, Danbury and Meriden are planning public clinics for residents. Local agencies are coordinating schedules to meet rising community needs.  The Hour

  • Condo and townhouse sales drove Connecticut home sales up 1.9% this third quarter—3,035 properties sold statewide in September. Norwalk saw a significant rise in new listings while other counties like Middlesex and New Haven reported strong condo sales growth.  The Hour
