CULTURE NEWS

  • Musician Moby recalled his first job at Johnny's Records in Darien in the 80s ahead of the store's 50th anniversary. Johnny's Records — a local landmark — will host live music, food and giveaways on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The Hour

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Rocks Middle School in Norwalk cut suspensions by 50% and improved student safety and attendance by using the RULER social emotional learning program — which trains teachers and students to recognize and manage emotions. The daily seven-minute lessons and weekly discussions have boosted feelings of belonging and a positive school climate for everyone.  The Hour
  • An anonymous donation of $200K is closing a $1.2M deficit in Norwalk Public Schools' lunch fund—ensuring all students continue to get free breakfast and lunch this school year. The district and city are contributing additional funds to support its Community Eligibility Provision program.  The Hour

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norwalk will offer early voting for its municipal election on November 4 with voting at City Hall Community Room from Oct 20 to Nov 2—extended hours on Oct 28 and Oct 30 and curbside voting for those with mobility issues. Residents needing absentee ballots may apply at the Town Clerk’s office or online with special service hours on November 1.  City of Norwalk
  • A new state law lets every town seize ATVs, dirt bikes and mini-motorcycles used in street takeovers and choose to crush or sell them—while also changing driver license penalties for repeat offenses. Local officials say that although street takeovers are rare in some communities, the law gives towns additional tools to act against illegal vehicle events.  The Hour
  • On Thursday, October 9, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and library officials marked Banned Books Week by urging residents to support books threatened by censorship amid a state law that protects library collections—targeting ongoing challenges for works on marginalized topics. State Rep. Dominique Johnson from Norwalk and Westport stressed that these books help young people see themselves, as report counts dropped from 117 challenges in 2023 to fewer than 20 in 2024.  Connecticut Public
