Good morning, Norwalk. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of families lined up at 46 Concord St. on Nov. 20 for the Thanksgiving Community Giveaway hosted by Norwalk Public Schools & Norwalk Mutual Aid, where over 300 families received a choice of turkey, ham, or chicken and a meal bag with sides amid growing food needs caused by rising grocery costs and SNAP cuts. Organizers also offered support services from local agencies to connect residents with further assistance.  Nancy On Norwalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CTDOT and Norwalk officials said the oak tree at Cemetery Street and East Avenue must be removed because enlarging the culvert for new drainage pipes would weaken the 75-year-old structure—risking catastrophic flooding. The city explained that several engineering reviews found no safe alternative design, and a removal date has not been set.  Nancy On Norwalk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Undercooked turkey and stuffing can spread harmful bacteria like Salmonella and Clostridium, making food poisoning a serious risk at Thanksgiving dinner. Quinnipiac University’s Lisa Cuchara advises Norwalk families to cook food to 165°F—use a thermometer, avoid washing raw poultry, and separate utensils to reduce contamination.  Nancy On Norwalk
  • Dr. Savetamal from The Connecticut Burn Center said that Thanksgiving will be a dangerous time as many patients will suffer burns and injuries from grease fires in busy kitchens. She advised that pot handles be moved away from cooking paths and kids and pets be kept at least three feet away from the stove - warning that cold water, not ice, should be used on burns.  News 12 Connecticut

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn receiver Skyler Bell was named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award on Tuesday—joining USC's Makai Lemon and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith. Bell leads all FBS pass catchers in receptions, yards and touchdowns, and the winner will be announced on Dec 14 at ESPN's College Football Awards Show.  The Hour
